The Bohemian Diet:
Halo-Halo from Digman

A recent trip to Cavite with peers brought me to Barangay Digman in the Municipality of Bacoor. Digman is famous for it's halo-halo, a Pinoy beverage made of shaved ice, milk and a lot of other ingredients like beans,   banana, macapuno, ube, corn, sago, gelatin, leche flan, etc. It has so many solid ingredients and now I'm not sure if halo-halo should be considered a beverage. It's more of a dessert.

Anyway, it is said that Japanese travelers brought the concept of this dessert in pre-war Philippines. Halo-halo is similar to their kakigori dessert and it is in the barangay of Digman that the Pinoy version of kakigori first originated.

A tall glass of halo halo in The Original Digman Halo-Halo is PhP 55. You can order a customized halo-halo if you don't like the other ingredients like the beans, if you have uric acid problems like my friend hehe.

Now here's another experimental digital portrait. This is Ken, one of my Facebook friends. This was inspired by the works of Russ Mills who invented the style he called "byroglyphics". He is one of my all-time favorite illustrators because of the grungy feel of his art.

Here I used my own sketch filter, superimposed images of brush strokes and splatters that I made on paper (with old screen printing ink), and texture of weathered canvas. Not bad huh?

Bohemian Diet:
For the Love of Lugaw

The other night my friends and I went to Lugawan Republic in BF Homes, Paranaque City. I had lugaw, of course. Perfect for the cold and wet weather. What I like about Lugawan Republic is that you can "customize" your lugaw by ordering separate toppings. A bowl of this rich lugaw is PhP 65. Toppings, such as sliced hard broiled egg or goto (beef tripe), ranges from Php 20 to Php 45. It's strange though that tokwa't baboy (tofu and pork), is not on the toppings menu. But you can order tokwa't baboy as a separate dish.   Lugaw Republic after all serves more than just lugaw. Lots of healthy and affordable dishes to choose from. Definitely for bohemians. ^_^

So again here's another portrait. This is my friend from college, Rachel. I've adopted the style of Warhol's serigraphs, added canvas texture and aged it a bit. Voila! Instant pop art!

Here's a new portrait I made. He's my friend Albert. This is my experiment on achieving an impressionist feel with lots of pastel colors, sharp and dynamic brush strokes. Seems okay. I'll try to experiment on vivid colors next time maybe.

"One Love" by Various Artists
from Around the World

I very much enjoyed  watching this video shared by a friend on facebook. It's a cover of Bob Marley's song One Love by singers and musicians from different countries. This is the third video by the people behind Playing For Change, a multimedia music project that seeks to bring together musicians from all over the globe.

Playing For Change also has a separate non-profit organization called Playing For Change Foundation which builds music schools for children around the world. Watch more of their videos in their website.

I thought of making a portrait of our dog here at home. She's Librada, a half yellow Labrador. She loves taking a nap on this steel chair in the garage.

My Bohemian Fashion:
Dashing in a Dashiki

Every bohemian man should  have a dashiki shirt in his closet. This blue printed dashiki is one of my favorite shirts, actually. It would have been more awesome though if I've gotten in from West Africa. Dashiki shirts you can buy around here are printed. I'm not really certain if authentic dashiki shirts have hand made designs - either embroidered, painted or done like batik.

Anyways, I think I should get another one with more vibrant colors.

A Collection of Rain Songs

Street art by Banksy.

It's a rainy Monday, again. Like we haven't had enough of this gloomy weather. Well we might as well get along with it. So here's a collection of songs about rain that I gathered for you guys. I got 22 tracks in here from different decades. Some song I've known and some I just recently discovered. I hope these tunes can cheer you up a bit. ^_^

Finally a Bit of Sunshine

I saw that it was sunny outside this morning at around 9 PM so I went outside to get some natural Vitamin D. It felt so good to feel the warmth of the sun on my skin again. We missed this, didn't we? It had been raining since Monday and it was quite torrential. Not a tropical storm but it sure poured like one, just like Ondoy back in 2009. So this monstrous monsoon rain left floods around Metro Manila and provinces in Luzon.

Luckily, my family live in flood free areas. But a lot of Filipinos were't so lucky. Many are still in evacuation centers and it's time to check on local charitable organizations, like the Philippine Red Cross, and find out how we can reach out to our flood-stricken kababayans.

As I'm writing this post I saw rain clouds forming outside my window. I guess the rains are not done with us yet  =/

Starbucks' Rocky Road Cake

I saw that they have a new cake on their rack. I thought of giving it a try, because I love rocky road ice cream and I became curious of the cake version.

Well, nothing beats ice cream, but this rocky road cake is nice and rich. Really worth it. PhP 140 a slice.

Ava Adore
by the Smashing Pumpkins

This is my most favorite song by the Smashing Pumpkins. I love the music video too.

Wednesday, August 1, 2012

The Smashing Pumpkins will be performing here in Manila as part of the Oceania Tour on August 7, 2012, at the Araneta Coliseum. And a group of friends had me to print this Zero shirt for them to wear on the concert.

Why not? After all, Smashing Pumpkins is one of my favorite bands from the 90's. Of course I've printed one for myself too. ^_^
